spell in the Cauldron because the entire Bomb family that lives there (not as bad as the Bastard Bomb but no picnic either) will aggro to your magic use, and the Bomb Queen has a chance to spawn either baby bombs or the Bastards. Fortunately, bombs in general are weak against ice and water, but heaven help you if you use any fire or weapons that deal in fire damage. If you are using Katanas, though, this is something you don t need to worry about. Barfira and Stoneskin are also a great help. For key drops I have had the most luck fighting Goblins (see info in previous quest on fighting Goblin mobs), the Old Opo-Opo (who does use lightning but is an easy kill) and if you really can t find it, the Volcanic Wasps. They use an ability known as Final Sting which can do upwards of 900 HP damage, so aggroing them for a Key is a gamble. Use the technique of luring one monster away from the others and killing it before jumping out into the open if soloing. Make sure you re fast enough and can take enough hits to get the monster where you want it so it cannot link with others. Use the Key to get Old Gauntlets from the Coffer. Go back to Guslam and he will tell you he cannot repair them. Head to Yin Pocanakhu in the Tenshodo shop in Lower Jeuno. She will tell you she has a toolbox that won t open. Pay her 1000 gil and she will reveal the location. We give it to you here, but unless you pay Yin the quest will not complete. The toolbox is on top of a crate outside the Duty Free Shop in Port Jeuno. Examine the ??? and a cutscene starts. Borghertz, a legendary blacksmith, appears and asks you to bring him Shadow Flames from Castle Zvahl in Xarcabard. Go to the Baileys in the castle - 37 - Final Fantasy XI Ninja Guide and examine the torch at (F-8). An NM Bomb called Dark Spark will spawn. Kill him and examine the torch again for Shadow Flames. To kill Dark Spark (which I ve found is pretty much impossible if you re not in a party), preferably a BLM/WAR or PLD/WHM/RDM or some variation thereof. Have the BLM cast a strong nuke at the start of battle, and I ve found that you can cast Sleep II or III on Dark Spark and his linked demons and keep one or more of them off your back while you take down HP. Have someone keep Stoneskin on your entire party and you should make it out with enough HP for any surprises. Dark Spark is extremely difficult and you need to take down his HP quickly before he can use any of his Bomb abilities on you and destroy your HP. An alternate strategy that I ve seen players using is to cast Gravity or Bind and then damage deal/tank to kill him that way, but I ve found that casting Sleep and nuking is the most efficient way to go. When you have the Shadow Flames in your inventory, return to the Duty Free Shop and examine the ??? again to get your reward. - 38 - Final Fantasy XI Ninja Guide 8. Relics Relics were added to FFXI during the Rise of the Zilart expansion as a secondary set of items you can find or quest for at high levels in the game. Some of these pieces are better than Artifacts, some aren t. If you are playing a Ninja I do suggest getting the Kikoku blade because it will make your levelling that much easier at Level 70+ and will give you a new Weapon Skill, which can only be obtained this way. 8.1. Ninja Relic Ninja Relic Kikoku Area: Zhval Castle Start point: Bailey NPC: Switchstix Min. Level: 70 Max Level: 75 Artifact: Kikoku and Weapon Skill Blade: Metsu Relic Walkthrough In the Zhval Castle Bailey you will encounter an NPC called Switchstix who says he can upgrade degraded weapons...in exchange for things he wants. You must quest for the items and bring them back to him, and then trade them by using the TRADE function on your menu. The first upgrade will cost you: Ihintanto x1 (the sword you will use to eventually upgrade to the Kikoku.) Relic Steel x1 Tarasque Skin x1 Twinthread x1 100 Byne Bill x4 Find the Ihintanto in Dynamis San D Oria or Beacedine. I have only ever found it on Vanguard mobs, although I have heard it also drops from Gitchfotch and Tombstones. Vanguards all possess jobs like WHM, BLM ect. They will aggro to you with any of the five senses and they link very fast, so plan to have backup against the links while you kill your primary target. Vanguards are fire-based and weak against water. The Vaguard Backstabber is the Vanguard that uses the Ninja job, so I ve found they are the easiest because you, as a Ninja, know what to expect. They love to use Minjin Gakure, so be - 39 - Final Fantasy XI Ninja Guide careful to kill them before their TP meter fills up. I suggest using Hojo: Ni against them and then dealing magic damage with your elemental spells (except for fire.) Buy your Relic Steel from a Goblin NPC in Castle Oztroja in Aragoneu, which can be
